Within the scope of the Historical Field Research course conducted by the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Çarşamba, Ondokuz Mayıs University, a field trip was organized to examine key historical sites in Samsun. The trip was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Özkan Özer Keskin, the course instructor. As part of the trip, initial observations were conducted around the Samsun Clock Tower, where its construction process, architectural features, and its place within the urban identity were discussed. The significance of the clock tower, as one of the symbolic structures of the city, was emphasized, particularly in terms of reflecting the late Ottoman understanding of urbanism. Subsequently, during the visit to the Great Mosque, the architectural plan, decorative elements, and its historical function as a place of worship were evaluated. The mosque’s central role in the religious and social life of Samsun was highlighted, along with the transformations it has undergone from past to present. At the final stop of the program, Samsun Taşhan, examinations were conducted on Ottoman-period commercial structures. The architectural characteristics of the inn, its function, and its role within the economic structure of the period were discussed, providing insights into the historical development of commercial life in the city. This field study enabled students to concretize their theoretical knowledge through direct engagement with historical sites and contributed to their ability to observe the relationship between urban history, architecture, and social life on-site. Such excursions aim to enhance students’ skills in analyzing and interpreting the historical environment.
