Within the scope of the Historical Field Research course conducted by the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Çarşamba, Ondokuz Mayıs University, a field trip was organized to the Samsun Museum. The trip was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Özkan Özer Keskin, the course instructor. During the field study, students had the opportunity to examine on-site the historical, cultural, and social heritage of the city exhibited within the Samsun City Museum. Through the objects in the museum collection, the transformation of Samsun from past to present was evaluated within a chronological framework. Throughout the visit, materials such as photographs, documents, and reconstructions—particularly those related to Samsun’s commercial life, transportation network, educational institutions, and social life—drew the students’ attention. Thanks to these materials reflecting the city’s collective memory, the transformation of the city from the Ottoman period to the Republic era was analyzed based on concrete data. This field trip enabled students to support their theoretical knowledge with tangible historical materials and contributed to their understanding of museums as significant research spaces in urban history studies. Such field studies aim to enhance students’ awareness of local history and to develop their skills in analyzing historical data on-site.
