Research Assistant Dr. Sevgi Akkoyun of the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Çarşamba, Ondokuz Mayıs University, met with students through her presentation titled “Choose Your Side: Classical Historiography – Modern Historiography.” The event comparatively examined the traditional approach of the historical discipline alongside modern and digital methods.
In the discussion, the fundamental methods of classical historiography were addressed by outlining the past and present of archival research, with particular emphasis on working with archival documents, classification, and interpretation processes. In the section on modern historiography, the digital humanities approach was introduced, highlighting the new opportunities technology offers for historical research. In this context, information was shared on how digital tools such as EndNote for reference management, Python and R for data analysis, Gephi for network analysis, and SPSS for statistical evaluation are used in historical studies.
While emphasizing the innovations digital humanities bring to historical writing, the opportunities for interdisciplinary work, and the speed and diversity they provide to researchers, the event—followed with great interest by students—was concluded interactively with a question-and-answer session.
