"Foundation–Society Relations in the Ottoman Empire" Event Held in the Faculty Library
The Socio Vision Community, operating within Ondokuz Mayıs University, hosted a meaningful event at the Çarşamba Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The program, held in a warm and engaging atmosphere in the faculty library, focused on the theme "Foundation–Society Relations in the Ottoman Empire."
The event’s speaker, Dr. Özkan Özer Keskin from the Department of History, evaluated the role of foundations (vakıfs) within the Ottoman social structure, highlighting their influence on social solidarity and the provision of public services. Dr. Keskin emphasized that the institution of the vakıf was not merely an expression of philanthropy; rather, it served as one of the essential pillars of social order, shaping areas such as urban development, education, healthcare, and cultural life.
The event was attended by Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. İbrahim Serbestoğlu, Vice Dean Dr. Cumhur Kaygusuz, Chair of the History Department Dr. Hakan Tan, academic advisor of the Socio Vision Community Research Assistant Burak Nazif Sarıcı, community members, and other students.
In the sincere atmosphere of the event, students engaged with Dr. Keskin during the Q&A session, asking questions and gaining deeper insights into the Ottoman vakıf system. Drawing attention for its contribution to understanding the historical background of social issues and for strengthening student–academic interaction, the event also held special significance as the very first activity of the Socio Vision Community.
