Our Faculty Member and Head of the Department of History, Dr. Hakan Tan, Met with Students at Çarşamba Anadolu Imam Hatip High School
Dr. Hakan Tan, faculty member and Head of the Department of History at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Çarşamba Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, met with high school students at Çarşamba Anadolu Imam Hatip High School during a talk titled “Getting to Know the Social Sciences.” The event, which drew considerable interest, provided students with enlightening insights into the scope of the social sciences, their research areas, and their significance in today’s world.
In his presentation, Dr. Tan emphasized that the social sciences are not limited to understanding the past; they also explore a wide range of topics from human behavior to social structures, from cultural change to political processes. Highlighting that the social sciences enhance individuals’ thinking, analytical, and questioning skills, Tan stated, “The social sciences teach us to understand people, society, and change. In this sense, they are not just an academic field but also a guide to life.”
Dr. Tan also offered advice on choosing the right academic field during university preparation, potential career paths, and the role of the social sciences in professional life, sharing examples that addressed students’ questions about their future.
Throughout the event, students asked questions about the subfields of the social sciences, creating an engaging and interactive atmosphere. The discussion focused on the types of questions explored in disciplines such as history, sociology, psychology, political science, and anthropology, as well as how these fields connect to everyday life.
